Summer Island Studio at 149 Maine Street in Brunswick welcomes back watercolorist and Asian brush painter, Jean Kigel for a show entitled Totems of Land and Sea during October. The gallery located in the Tontine Mall, is open from 9:30 to 5:30 Monday through Saturday, and 10: - 4 on Sunday. Summer Island Studio will be open for the Friday night Art Walk until 8:00 in October.
Kigel’s signature piece, Totem, depicts of buoy-slung driftwood poles, impaled at the edge of Harbor Island in Muscongus Bay. The color-coded buoys exalt the tenuous life of the clan of Maine lobstermen. They symbolize a tribal community bonded by a spirit of self-help and the can-do spirit of their forbearers.
In this show Kigel’s paintings follow her totemic theme of by depicting symbols related to other working-people in Maine, including lumberjacks, and off-shore fishermen and anglers. These totemic symbols depict a stark forest, the Davey of a lobsterman, and a variety of gyotaku fish prints.
Award-winning artist Kigel specializes in watercolor and Asian brush painting. Her works have been widely exhibited in museum, university and private galleries, and have been reviewed in the Boston Globe and the Maine Sunday Telegram. FMI call 207-373-1810.
